Grandma and Grandpa came to visit in August and we coordinated it when Oliver had a four day weekend due to assessments. With most kids in school, we took full advantage and went to the zoo. It's been quite some time since we've been to the zoo and we were all excited.
The animals must have been excited to see us too because they were all quite active. Or, maybe they were just enjoying the cool weather. Likely, the weather, but we like to think that they were happy to see us too.
The snow leopards were quite frisky.
The tiger had been pacing until he decided to lay down and wait for someone to deliver his breakfast out the door that he's lying by.
The polar bear was in for a good morning chin scratch.
On the top of Oliver's list of animals to see was the snakes, which also came with all of the other creepy crawlies that live in the jungle including these toads that were in love.
Kellan found some fish that were handing out kisses, including this long slimy looking one.
This yellow fish was hilarious. It would come up to the glass and...
... give a big toothy grin.
The seahorses were hanging on for dear life.
Always a Ham Fam Boys crowd pleaser, the Komodo Dragon.
As the rain started to drizzle from the sky, the umbrellas went up.
The elephants didn't mind a little rain and neither did we.
Sometimes, an umbrella is just a fun accessory.
Elephant ears are a fun accessory as well.
Elephant ears built for two?
Kellan taking a spin in a cart from Africa.
Oliver and Grandma having serious conversation about the penguins.
The always popular hippo sculpture / photo op.
Kellan and Oliver hamming it up.
When another photographer is in the house, Mommy takes full advantage to jump in a photo too.
Sometimes, this guy is just to handsome not to take a photo.
Another highly requested stop was the birds that you can feed.
Oliver was quite natural at feeding the birds.
Kellan tried a bit too, but he as a tad shy with the birds.
As the rain sprinkled down, the music played on.
Even the gorillas came over to say hello.
Then, the big male promptly let us know what he thought of us.
Kellan and the gorilla seeing eye to eye.
Nothing like a family photo with a friendly gorilla.
As we went by the orangoutangs, we noticed that they were eating goodies out of juice bottles. Then, one of them got thirsty and he went and filled up his water bottle. Maybe we aren't too far off in the chain of evolution after all as we all like fresh bottled water.
These flying monkeys gave us quite the show. As they hung from the glass in front of some other people, we watched this one poop in his hand and then eat it. It was disgusting and a highlight for the boys.
As he swang our way, we swang out. We didn't want to know what trick he was going to perform for us that may or may not have involved his own poop.
On our way out, the boys got to see a special treat. The zookeepers were giving a demonstration on this blue macaw. The boys were in awe.
We had a great day at the zoo with Grandma and Grandpa. Due to the rain and the school schedule, the crowd was light and lucky for us, the animals were active. We love that we are so fortunate to have such a great zoo here in Denver and we like to support it as often as possible, even if the visits are fewer and further between these days.
