I told Nana and Papa that they are the only people that I've ever heard of that travel from Wyoming to Texas in August. Most people travel north in the summer and south in the winter. Not Nana and Papa. They brave the summer heat and the Wyoming winters to hit up birthday parties. This year, they headed to Texas for Williams birthday and on the way, they stopped to say hello to us.
On Saturday night, Uncle Jim (Papa's brother) and Aunt Donna came over to join us for dinner. Keith dished up some of his famous guacamole at the new backyard bar. Just looking at this photo makes me want to wake him up from sleeping just so he can whip up some guacamole for me to munch on. I'm smart enough to know that's a bad idea, but maybe I'll suggest it for this weekend.
Kellan hasn't been too keen on riding any bike of any kind, ever. Until, recently. Once or twice he has asked to ride the Stryder so when he does, we gladly pull it out. He doesn't go very far and never fast. Yes, we need to get this kid a helmet. Next time we're at Target, we promise.
Both Oliver and Kellan are catching on to the fun of photos.
HALLELUJAH!!
Oliver ran in from the side and said "I want to be in the photo". Mommy's heart burst with gladness and she replied "Absolutely, I'll take your photo".
Don't these two cutie pies melt your heart?
Then... they spotted two brightly colored cans on the counter. You see, Nana brought a care package that was filled with Kellan's birthday gifts from family in Wyoming. This included something fun for now for the boys from their honorary Aunt Tammy. We have adopted Tammy into our family because she is family. You see, her sister is married to Keith's brother and they grew up next door to each other so we have decided to just call it a done deal that we are honorary family. I think the honorary part might be wavering after this. Oh yes... SILLY STRING!!!
Ok, only teasing about the honorary part wavering. Actually, I'm considering stealing her idea because the boys LOVE IT!!! She also sent us some flarp, which makes disgusting bodily function noises. Even though it is completely inappropriate, the giggles are contagious when cutie pie boys such as Oliver and Kellan are flarping. Keith and I may have been known to flarp now and then, just to get a giggle out of unsuspecting flarp recipients.
How can you not say "Go ahead, silly string your heart out" when this is happening.
(don't mind the photo quality, it was getting dark)
The best part was the attack on Daddy!
Yes, we are still cleaning up stuck silly string from the brand new patio but every time I peel some away, I smile in remembering how much fun we had.
Then... it was Mommy's turn.
RUN!!!
This was the result, as well as a bunch down my back side.
Don't worry, it doesn't stain clothing like it does the patio.
Fun times were had by all, especially the recipients of the silly string.
Thanks Aunt Tammy for having the secret to success for fun boy gifts. I'm now stealing your idea.
That evening, we settled in for some R&R on the couch with Nana and Papa. I couldn't help but notice that they curled right up with them. Oliver was so comfy that he thought Papas foot made a good foot rest. Really, it makes perfect sense.
Meanwhile, Kellan was busy making giggly faces at Nana.
Before we knew it, the day was done and we were ready to start a new one.
Some time back, Nana had seen a post from when we went to the Butterfly Pavilion and she let me know that she would like to go their some time. Some time turned into this time when we headed out in the morning in search of butterflies.
Before seeing the main event, there are several exhibits to see. Among them is Rosie the tarantula. Apparently Rosie likes to stretch her legs and crawl across visitors hands. The boys raced to get in line and they both took turns letting Rosie take a stroll across their palm. Last time, we couldn't get them near Rosie. It seems, they have come to accept Rosie and her eight furry legs.
Look at how attentive Kellan is to the process. I guess if Oliver survives, he'll survive.
Kellan was so excited and eager to learn how to hold Rosie.
He couldn't wait to get a close look at her.
It was Love at first sight.
It's a good thing that we can visit Rosie at the Butterfly Pavilion so they don't expect to have one at home.
Another exhibit that we love is the bee hive.
There are a gazillion bees, busy building their hive. You can even listen into what all the BUZZ is about.
There is a traffic counter that counts how many bees have passed through. With the nice weather, this was a high traffic day. The best part was seeing the pollen on the legs of the incoming bees compared to the pollen-less bees that were heading off to work.
Kellan walked around displaying his "I help Rosie" sticker, just in case any of the other bugs got any crazy idea.
This bug was quite popular with the boys.
It's hard to see, but Oliver wanted to pose next to this big tarantula.
A bit better shot of the tarantula that looks like he's going to climb on Kellan's precious little cheeks.
Of course, we always have to stop to pet the crabs and star fish.
Apparently, it was cool that this lobster guy was eating. The guest relations lady told us several times to check it out.
FINALLY, we made it to the main event, the butterfly exhibit. Just inside the doorway, Papa found himself with a hitch hiker on his shoulder.
There were butterflies all around, even on the ground.
This guy was HUGE. You can't tell from the photo but his body was bigger around than my thumb. HUGE!
Nana found herself with a hitch hiker in her hair.
Of course, her loving son was quick to make witty remarks about it just being stuck in her hairspray.
Are these the kind comments that I have to look forward too as the boys grow up?
Regardless, Nana and Papa were quite popular with the butterflies. It was a rare treat to have them land on both of them.
Oliver found it to be quite peaceful to sit on the bench and watch for a while.
That is until his little brother sat by him and demonstrated how a butterfly flies.
It was fun to watch Nana and Papa enjoy the exhibit.
It's also fun that the boys ask for photo ops with what they think is awesome, like the butterfly hatching box.
On our way out, we found some fun educational games.
Have you ever wondered what it was like to be in a spiders web?
Ya... me neither, but now Keith knows.
So does Kellan.
Nana and Oliver learned how competitive they each are. I'm not sure who won, but they had a ton of fun.
Thanks to Nana and Papa for coming to visit. We had a great time and we are so glad that we could take you to the Butterfly Pavilion.
