Oliver had his one year check-up on Friday and he passed with flying colors. The doctor said he is very healthy and right on track with where he should be. I was a little worried because his height and weight have slowed down but the doctor said that is very normal.

Oliver's First Birthday
Since Oliver's first birthday was on a Tuesday, we treated him to a mid-week Red Robin celebration. We usually don't go out to eat during the week but this is a special occasion. He dined on one of his favorite meals, macaroni and cheese with cantaloupe. We were also in luck because the big Red Robin bird was there AND the waiters sang Happy Birthday to Oliver. He loved the song and clapped after they were done. Of course, the highlight wasn't the meal, the big Red Robin bird walking around, the happy birthday song OR his new bib, the highlight was the balloon!

Since all three of us had been sick for two weeks, we cancelled his birthday party that was scheduled last Sunday and moved it out a week. We'll be celebrating tomorrow and we'll be sure to have lots of pictures.

Funny Kid
This is just a funny video that we took of Oliver this week right after his bath. If you bounce him he makes noise so that his voice bounces. I remember doing the same thing as a kid. It's funny that he has figured it out so early.

Oliver received an early birthday present in the mail this last week and Keith put it together for him today. Since his birthday party was moved to next week, we didn't want him to have to wait another week to have this cool truck that he can practice walking with. He loves it and has been playing with it all afternoon. Here are a few pictures of him checking out his new ride. Of course, after my memory card was filled up he started flashing his smile.

Oliver's New Haircut

Sunday Drive
All three of us have been sick for over a week with a cold. Poor Keith has been sick since Hawaii. He thinks he got over what he caught in Hawaii and now he is sick with a second version of the cold. We were planning to have Oliver's first birthday party tomorrow, but we moved it to next weekend. He seems to be feeling better today, but Keith and I can barely talk and we're still recuperating.
Last weekend we had quite the adventure. Oliver wasn't napping for more than 15 or 20 minutes. We decided to go to the kid friendly, Red Robin, for lunch and then take a drive. Our theory was that Oliver might sleep longer in the car. We only wanted to be gone for an hour or two and we didn't want to get too far from home since he might be very cranky waking up in his car seat. Besides, the Broncos were playing at 2:00 so Keith wanted to be home at least by half time.
At 1:00, we headed west on HWY-285. A couple of years ago, we did this drive and found a road that headed South in Conifer and hooked up with a road the wound around to Kipling and C-470. Sunday, when we drove through Conifer (30 mins west) we thought we took the same road to the south. We drove and drove and eventually ended up at a T in the road at the Platte River. Hmm.... we decided this was the wrong road, but SURELY, it will hit a major road, even though this was a dirt road. There were several Sunday drivers passing us going the opposite direction, so clearly there was an out. After driving for what felt like forever on a wash board dirt road, we saw a sign that said 12 miles to Sedalia. The road was a dirt road. OR, we could go straight and it was paved. (lesson learned, the paved road is not always the best route. Sometimes you have to bear a few bumps in order to reach your destination). We couldn't exactly remember where Sedalia was, so we took the paved road and drove and drove and drove. All the while, Oliver was sleeping (YAY) and Keith kept checking his blackberry to see if his gps would work. We didn't have a signal so we kept driving. Jokingly I said we were going to end up in CO Springs (hour south of our house on I-25). By the time we got cell service, we were about 20 minutes outside of CO Springs and with no other road to go East on. UGH! As we approached CO Springs, Oliver woke up and was quite vocal about sharing his dissatisfaction about still being in the car. We saw on the gps that we could cut through CO Springs by Garden of the Gods. This back-fired on us and all we got was a driving tour of the G of the G and ended up on the same HWY we started on. Somewhere between CO Springs and Castle Rock, Oliver fell asleep. According to the gps, there was a short-cut from Castle Rock to Chatfield, we decided to take it. This road went right by Sedalia. UGH... we should have opted for the 12 mile dirt road!!! A 4 hours drive later, Oliver slept for 3 hours, Keith missed the Broncos game, we saw some beautiful parts of Colorado, and Oliver was MUCH happier that night. We think the three hours of sleep did wonders. This brings a whole new meaning to "Sunday Drive"

Hawaii to Home - Day 9 (Saturday)

At 3:30 AM, our alarm clock went off. We had a 4:30 shuttle arriving for a 7 AM flight. Ugh! We made it, no problem. We loaded the airplane, taxied out and then the captain came on and said the "change oil filter" light came on. We went back to the gate to have the oil filter changed. Don't they know they should be doing this during routine maintenance and not as a break-fix? In this time, Oliver fell asleep. The whole time I knew we were losing valuable time as Oliver slept. Two hours later, we took off and Oliver woke up. He did great on the flight, but our delay also cut into our 3 hours lay over in LA which was suppose to be time for a good meal and stretch time for Oliver. We had about 45 minutes in LA and we ate McDonalds. Oh-well. Oliver did great coming home and we were all happy to be back in our own beds. I think the happiest of all was Madalyn! She purred all night! The funny thing is, we didn't take many photos on the last day. I guess we were all done with tourist time.
Can't leave home without it... the kid AND the blackberry.

Hawaii - Day 8 (Friday) - Kauai to Oahu

Instead of taking the red-eye direct flight home, we opted to fly from Honolulu to LA to Denver. With this, we had to fly from Kauai to Honolulu on Friday. With Keith being sick, I had high hopes of taking Oliver to the pool in Waikiki. However, Mother Nature had other plans. It was overcast and sprinkling when we go there. Instead of pool time, Keith and Oliver took a nap and I went souvenir shopping. Afterwards, we all went and had our last dinner in Hawaii.
Oliver was vacationed out... he took advantage of a cat nap on the way to the airport. He crashed hard!
For dinner, we went to Chuck's on Waikiki beach and watched the surfers. We had eaten here before but we knew it was good and close.

Hawaii - Day 7 (Thursday) - Waimea Valley and our 4th Anniversary

I've had to take a blogging break this week. We have all come down with nasty colds which has taken its toll on all of us.
On the seventh day on our Hawaiian vacation and our last full day on Kauai we headed south to explore the Waimea Valley. It has been described as the Grand Canyon of Hawaii.
We debated on spending the day by the pool or site seeing. We decided to go site seeing and make the most of our last day.
This is looking up Waimea Canyon from the beginning of the road. The road was 18 miles one way to the very end.
These are sugar cane fields, some of the last ones in Hawaii.
I loved this waterfall. It wasn't on the map OR a "must see" in the book, but I loved the color and the contrast between the water and the dirt.
Here is Waimea Canyon. It was very large and beautiful, but hard to see. The storm clouds hang out here and so it was always a gamble if we were going to see much.
Here is an example of the mass abundance of chickens and roosters, everywhere!
This is the very end of Waimea canyon. We should be able to look over this edge and see the NaPali coast. No luck today.
When we got back to the hotel, we had 1 hour to go to the pool before it was time to get ready for dinner. The pool was great and Oliver loved it. Keith and I took turns going down the slide, which was SO FUN!!! Oliver didn't quite make the height requirement. Maybe next time, buddy.
I thought I took more picture of the pool, but I guess not. This is one of the hidden hot tubs.
Sept 25, it was our 4 year anniversary.
According to the hostess, we had the best seat in the house. Maybe she says that to everyone, but we really did have a great seat. We think we can thank our travel agent, Jeff, for that.

Dinner was excellent. Everything had been caught fresh THAT DAY!!! I don't know that we've ever had fresher fish. The service was excellent, the view was breath taking and reminiscing the past four years was priceless.
Earlier in the day, Keith was having cold symptoms. We had stopped to get his some Dayquil, but once dinner was over, he thought he was done for also. We had to pay for the nanny for a minimum of 3 hours and we were back in 2.5 hours. He didn't care. That evening he had a high temperature (not that we had a thermometer handy) and felt ill. He was ready for bed, early. I didn't think it was too bad since it was the season premier of Gray's Anatomy. WOO HOO!!! Keith fought this cold the rest of the vacation and all of the next week. He refers to it as the Polynesian Curse. He thinks it is because he was laughing at the hula dancers at the Luau. Maybe So!
